Evaluation of gingival microcirculation in patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment: a pilot study.

2014

AIM: Among the many biological effects which occur during orthodontic movement, we decided to investigate gingival microcirculation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the biological microvascular response to the application of orthodontic force in vivo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty patients (case group) between 9-22 years of age (average± DS 12±3.01) were selected for the study (M/F ratio: 20/20). They needed fixed orthodontic treatment due to several types of malocclusion. Forty healthy subjects (control group) were also recruited (M/F ratio 20/20; average age 12 years ± 4.01; Mean±SD =10.04±1.7). A videocapillaroscopic examination was performed on each patient on the buccal alveolar mu…

Orthodontic treatment need in a Spanish young adult population

2011

Objectives: Orthodontic treatment need has often been assessed in child populations, but few studies employing internationally-recognized indices have been conducted in adult or young adult populations. The aim of this study was to determine the orthodontic treatment need of a young adult population in Spain by means of the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI), the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and the need perceived by the patients. Study design: A cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted in a broad, representative sample of 671 adults aged between 35 and 44 years using health centers in the Valencia Region of Spain, following the recommendations of the World Health Organiz…

Does the orthodontic treatment induces dental pulp cellular death? Caspase-3 and-9, HSP60 and TUNEL expression

2011

Objective: To evaluate the hypothesis of human dental pulp cell death during orthodontic treatement (O.T) and the degree of apoptosis through the expression level of the proteins Caspase-3,-9, TUNEL and HSP60. Materials and methods: Human dental Pulp were coming from both male and female patients (N=20; age 10-14years). The technique used was the Straight Wire, which involves Nickel-Titanium or Steel archwires. The increase of pressure applied on teeth was gradual. Some patients were subjected to a premolar extraction after 3 months treatment, and others after 6 months. Samples were Bouin-fixed, paraffin-embedded and afterwards processed for immunohistochemistry using anti-caspase-3,-9 anti…

Post-orthodontic position of lower incisors and gingival recession: A retrospective study

2017

Background To evaluate if changes in lower incisor position following orthodontic treatment are correlated with development of gingival recessions. Material and methods Pre- and post-treatment digital models and lateral cephalograms of 22 subjects were collected retrospectively. The clinical crown length, gingival scallop, and papilla height of the central lower incisor were measured along with the cephalometric incisor's inclination, the distance from the mandibular plane, and the distance between the Infradentale and Menton points. Statistical correlations between gingival and cephalometric variables were studied. In addition, two groups were defined based on the post-treatment incisor in…

Cross-sectional study of malocclusion in Spanish children

2013

Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the orthodontic treatment need of the child population of the Valencia region of Spain, employing the DAI and the IOTN, to examine the relations between treatment need, socio-economic data and gender and to assess the diagnostic agreement between the two indices. Study Design: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in a random representative sample of the schoolchild population of the Valencia region of Spain. The sample size was a total of 765 children aged 12 and 15 years at 39 schools. Results: The orthodontic treatment need assessed by the DAI was 21.7% at 12 years of age and 14.1% at 15 years. The orthodontic treatment need a…

Advances in the role of oral devices in the treatment of OSAS

2021

Over the past years, a novel direction in dentistry, named 'Dental Sleep Medicine,' has been increasingly developed. The objective is to find an effective remedy for the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome (OSAS) through the use of various Oral Appliances (OAs). These appliances can be used alternatively or in conjunction with the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), depending on the degree of OSAS and patient compliance. The various OAs available and discussed in the medical literature differ from each other based on the patency mechanism of the airways. Furthermore, OAs determine not only an improvement of the respiratory flow, but also the improvement of cardiovascular …

Comparative Study of Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQL) between Different Types of Orthodontic Treatment

2021

Background and objectives: Although the main objective of any orthodontic treatment is to correct malocclusion, a range of psychosocial and/or esthetic factors drive patients to undergo orthodontic treatment. The aim of the present study was to analyze variations in oral health-related quality of life (OHRQL) levels in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment by means of four types of appliances: fixed buccal metal brackets, fixed buccal esthetic/ceramic brackets, fixed lingual brackets, and clear aligners. Material and Methods: The study sample comprised 120 patients aged 18 to 68 years who attended the Orthodontic department at the Dental Clinic of the University of Valencia. The Index o…

The Bio-Molecular Dynamics of Dental Pulp in Different Clinical Scenarios

2015

Dental pulp (DP) is a very dynamic tissue both in health and in disease. When exposed to stressors and pathological conditions. It undergoes a complex series of biological reactions whereby alterations affect the pulp tissue at tissue cellular and molecular levels. The aim of this review is to update the reader on the various bio-molecular alterations in the dental pulp under different clinical conditions: orthodontic treatment (OT), caries, pulpitis and others. The morphological changes in the composition of the DP rang from the reversible remodeling to apoptosis and sometimes necrosis. Many apoptotic factors are involved like Bcl2, Bax and the significant increase in Caspases 9 and 3, as …
